CBD edibles are a great way to add CBD to your diet. They’re tasty, discreet, and good-quality products deliver consistent, albeit low, dosage. Because they’re commercially made, however, most CBD edibles contain ingredients that may not be healthy, such as artificial sweeteners, artificial flavoring, and preservatives.
If you’re thinking of taking CBD for holistic wellness or for a specific, potential health benefit, you can actually make your own CBD edibles. This way, you’ll have control over the ingredients you use, so you can make sure that your edibles are healthy. Here are a couple of easy and popular CBD edibles recipes which you can also recreate and customize in any number of ways.
A general guide for proper dosing
First and foremost, you’ll need good-quality CBD oil or tincture. A tincture is the better option for cooking; but because CBD tinctures are produced through solvent extraction, make sure the product is made by a reputable company who does third-party lab testing to make sure their tinctures do not contain any residual solvent.
Whether you choose CBD oil or tincture, get a product that is unflavored.
Determining the appropriate dosage you need will depend on a number of factors, including your weight and the purpose of your CBD intake. It’s always best to consult a professional for proper dosing recommendations. CBD oil/tincture products will also have dosing recommendations printed on the product label/insert.
Follow these recommendations, but start with the lowest recommended dose when you make your first batch of edibles. Observe how your body responds to this dose; gradually increase it if you don’t get the desired effect. It’s important that you increase the dose per batch gradually, in case you experience any adverse reactions — which you can also correct by slowly reducing the dosage.
All-natural CBD fruit gummies
You can easily customize this easy three-ingredient recipe by using different fruits for different batches. The recipe calls for all-natural ingredients, so the gummies are both nutritious and delicious. Of course, make sure you’re using good-quality and, ideally, organic CBD oil/tincture.
Before you get started, here are some important reminders.
- If you’re using molds or just cutting your gummies into smaller pieces, the size and total number of gummies you end up with will determine the dosage per gummy.
- The CBD concentration of the oil/tincture you use will also determine the final dose per gummy.
This recipe uses 1mL of CBD concentrate; if you have a 500-mg concentrate, 1mL of CBD will give you 500mg of CBD. If you’re using 500-mg CBD oil, 1mL of CBD will give you 16.6 mg of CBD. If your final yield is 50 gummies:
- Using 1mL CBD oil (with 16.6mg of CBD) will give you 0.33mg CBD per gummy.
- Using 1mL CBD concentrate (with 500mg of CBD) will give you 10mg of CBD per gummy.
The formula to calculate the final dosage per gummy is:
- Milligrams of CBD per 1mL divided by the total number of gummies.
1 ½ cups freshly puréed fruit
1 ½ cups water or freshly squeezed juice
½ cup unflavored gelatin powder
1mL CBD oil/concentrate
- In a food processor or blender, puree your fresh fruit until smooth. Set aside.
- In a small saucepan, add the water/juice and evenly sprinkle the gelatin powder over the liquid. Do not stir. Set it aside and allow it to stand for 2 minutes.
- When the 2 minutes are up, cook the thickened mixture over medium-low heat until it liquifies. Gently stir the mixture only after it liquifies. Let it simmer for one or two minutes and then remove from heat.
- Pour the fruit purée into the gelatin mixture. Mix well.
- Add the CBD and continue stirring.
- Quickly transfer the mixture to a beaker or a small pitcher with a beak, or use a pipette to fill your mold.
- Refrigerate your gummies for at least 30 minutes.
- Remove the gummies from the mold and place them in an air-tight container.
Your gummies will keep in the fridge for up to 7 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
*Do not use pineapple, kiwi fruit, guava, papaya, or figs in the recipe. These fruits contain bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down the protein in gelatin into amino acids.
CBD chocolate-covered strawberries
These can be a treat for yourself or a gift for your special someone. Your best chocolate option for this recipe is dark chocolate, so you can also get its antioxidant benefits. You can also use vegan chocolate, and the recipe will still be just as delicious.
1 pint fresh strawberries
¾ cup chocolate chips/shaved chocolate
½ teaspoon coconut oil
1mL CBD concentrate/oil
- Wash the strawberries and then place them in a strainer/colander to dry.
- Mix the chocolate and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave for 60 seconds to melt the chocolate. Remove from the microwave and stir the mixture.
- Microwave the mixture several more times, for 30 seconds each time and stir in between.
- Once all the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth, use a digital thermometer to check its temperature. The temperature should be lower than 240 degrees before you can stir in the CBD; if it’s 240 degrees or higher, let the mixture cool for a bit. *At a certain temperature, heat degrades CBD.
- Coat the strawberries with chocolate by dipping them one by one. Place them on a baking tray or a plate covered with a baking sheet.
- Wait until the chocolate has hardened. Place your scrumptious treat in a sealable container and refrigerate, or indulge right away.
You can also use your CBD chocolate in other ways. Just pour it into a shallow baking pan lined with a baking sheet and let it harden, cut into smaller pieces, and enjoy the CBD chocolate as it is. Or use it to coat your homemade oatmeal cookie, apple slices, or plain pretzels.
